Journalists are facing competition: Platforms like wikileaks reveal scandals, allow unprecedented insights into political strategies, and begin to impinge on the role of the journalist. Apparently, the public receives an additional level of control and knowledge. But is unconditional transparency of political systems, that so-called whistleblowers usually strive for, always beneficial for democracy? And how should journalists respond if they want to prevent a takeover of their distinctive role?
During this year's European Youth Media Convention, which will take place between the 3rd and the 6th of August in Berlin (Germany), we will try to find answers to these questions and outline the future for young media makers. Participants will have the opportunity to meet up with 39 other young media makers from all over Europe and outline the situations of their own country.
You can attend lectures and discuss with experts. In addition, you will get the chance to produce journalistic print-, video-, audio- or photography content according to your interest at the event.
If you want to be a part of the convention, already have experience in journalism, and if you are between 18 and 25 years old then apply online by sending us a short motivation letter to participateEYMC2011@jugenpresse.de .
There is no participation fee. Free board and lodging is provided. Travel costs are not reimbursed
The application deadline is the 15th of June. For further questions about your application or the event, do not hesitate to contact Sebastian Schütz ( s.schuetz@jugendpresse.de ).
The European Youth Media Convention is organized and funded by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Youth Press Germany and the European Youth Press.

Skills taught
By participating in the "Journalism in the Digital World" programme, Fellows acquire skills in the following fields:

Economics of the web and entrepreneurial journalism

Attendance and E-Learning
The "Journalism in the Digital World" programme is a blended-learning programme. It consists of five stages: three attendance phases in Germany and two e-learning phases. In the three study stays in Hamburg, Cologne and Berlin, Fellows, supported by the teaching staff, intensively acquire new journalistic skills in lectures, practical group work, discussions and visits to innovative working newsrooms. These attendance phases are separated by two e-learning phases during which Fellows create journalistic products and participate in webinars and chats at home in their own familiar working and living environment. The e-learning phase requires an average time commitment of 7 hours a week. After the end of the course, Intajour will remain in close contact with its Fellows, through alumni services.

Lecturers
Intajour courses are run by highly specialised lecturers and trainers from Germany and abroad, who have considerable experience with international study groups. Many Intajour lecturers work full-time for publications by Bertelsmann Group's various divisions, e.g. RTL Group, Gruner + Jahr and Random House, - while others have a different background. Intajour attaches great importance to the journalistic expertise of lecturers as well as their experience as educators.

Applicants will have demonstrated their journalistic talent as a member of an editorial team or as a freelance.

1st International Citizen Media Award 2011
Aims
The 1st International Citizen Media Award intends to honor tremendous work in the field of citizen media and its products in the categories VIDEO, AUDIO and INTERNET that have been created by private, non-commercial producers. The award distinguishes the dedication of these European, national and international producers and their reporting concerning locally, regionally, globally and socially relevant topics.
At the same time this prize should support the commitment of citizens, volunteers and activists to get involved in the development and setup of an active civil society.
Categories
The jury awards the prize in the following categories:

Video (individual product, short movie, movie in a television broadcast, video podcast, etc.)
Audio (individual product, radio spot in a radio broadcast, podcast, etc.)
Internet (homepage, blog, portal, etc.)

Prizes
3 prizes per category:

    1st prize: 1000 € – trophy – certificate
2nd prize: Participation in an international media camp or media seminar – certificate
3rd prize: Digital photo camera – certificate

Participants
The competition is worldwide open for single participants, groups, associations, civil initiatives, school classes and especially for producers, actors and editorial teams in the field of citizen media work.
Content of products
The topic for the 2011 award is: POVERTY
Poverty is a worldwide problem which shows up in several facets. There are differences in the understanding of “poverty”. In industrial states poverty is interpreted different than in less developed countries. There are also different personal and social views and strategies to overcome poverty. Tendered products should medially present the different types of poverties as well as different ways to get out of it. The personal dedication of the producers is in the forefront of the jury’s interest.
Beside the personal interest, quality, medial implementation, activity, authenticity, extent and relevance of research, design elements and innovativeness are relevant. Special features of the products in the different categories (genres) will be especially considered by the jury.
Application
Applications can be send postally in the form of a CD, DVD, MiniDV cassette or an USB flash drive. Alternatively links to portals can be sent, where the audio and video productions can be downloaded permanently. Furthermore the possibility of uploading audio and video products up to the website www.europeanweb.tv is also given. There you can find instructions how to do so in the accordant rubric. Concerning internet projects a link adress is enough.
